This is -THE- Football Puppy Chow. It’s unrealistic to expect the average person to have a budget that affords them the ability to acquire pastel green M&M’s at this time of year in addition to tiny sugar footballs. I just wanted to steal a middle-tier recipe and try to push some books from Amazon (promos below!), but I take issue with the fact that a borderline traditional make-at-home recipe has been informally standardized using premium products aaaaand I just realized that it’s always been that way because Chex.

Game Day Puppy Chow

This classic Southern winter snack is all ready for football season!

INGREDIENTS

Select ingredients:

  • Brown puppy chow:

  • 7 cups Chex cereal

  • 1/4 cup (4 tablespoons)

  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips

  • 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter

  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

  • 1 cup powdered sugar

  • Green puppy chow:

  • 7 cups Chex cereal

  • 1/4 cup (4 tablespoons) butter

  • 8-ounces white chocolate, cut up small

  • 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter

  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

  • 1/2 cup fresh shredded coconut (in the freezer section)

  • 12 drops green food coloring

  • 1 1/4 cups powdered sugar

  • Little Footballs:

  • 1 (6-ounce) bag whole almonds

  • Royal icing:

  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar

  • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar

  • 1-2 teaspoons water

  • 1 (10-ounce) bag mint M&M's

SAVE CHECKED INGREDIENTS TO SHOPPING LIST

DIRECTIONS

  1. Mix together ingredients to make royal icing. You want this to be fairly thick. Add a little more water if needed. Place the royal icing in a small Ziploc bag and cut off a very small corner. Twist the bag and squeeze to pipe on football laces to whole almonds. Gently place them on to a half sheet pan lined with parchment paper to dry. About 10-15 minutes.

  2. In a large saucepan, over medium heat, melt the chocolate chips, butter, and peanut butter. Stir occasionally with a wooden spoon or rubber spatula. Once the mixture is melted, remove from the heat and add the vanilla extract. Pour the Chex cereal into the melted chocolate mixture and stir to coat everything. Place the powdered sugar in a large Ziploc bag. Pour the chocolate coated cereal into the bag and shake until completely coated. Let the mixture dry on a parchment lined sheet pan for 15-20 minutes.

  3. In a large saucepan, over medium heat, melt the white chocolate, butter, and peanut butter. Stir occasionally with a wooden spoon or rubber spatula. Once the mixture is melted, remove from the heat, add the vanilla extract and coconut. Pour the Chex cereal into the melted chocolate mixture and stir to coat everything. Place the powdered sugar in a large Ziploc bag. Pour the chocolate coated cereal into the bag and shake until completely coated. Add a little more powdered sugar if the mixture is too sticky. Let the mixture dry on a parchment lined sheet pan for 15-20 minutes.

  4. Combine the brown and green puppy chow, along with the football almonds. Serve immediately, or store in an airtight container for a few days.

  • Step 1

    In a saucepan over low heat, melt the chocolate; add peanut butter and mix until smooth.

  • Step 2

    Remove from heat, add cereal and stir until coated.

  • Step 3

    Pour powdered sugar into large plastic bag, add coated cereal and shake until well coated. Store in airtight container.
