Rocky’s Weekly Stock Picks

Oh boy, if ever there was a week to not invest in anything….

Not because of market conditions, or even having just two weeks left to file our tax returns (Oct. 17 is the 2022 [extended] deadline for filing returns for tax year 2021). Largely we had a large annual bill come due, in addition to a surprise expense, on top of all the monthlies coming in at almost the same time.

As responsible adults, we are of course prepared for this, though not particularly thrilled.

  1. CRF - $8.12, ex-div 10/13, $0.173 per share per month.

  2. CLM - $$8.57, ex-div 10.13, $0.18 per share per month.

CRF/CLM are both Cornerstone funds, and we like both. We also want to take advantage of the downturn in price, just in case it starts to rebound sooner than later.

  3. ARR - $4.87/share, ex-div 10/14, $0.10 per month per share. Armour Residential REIT is a solid security for income, and trades monthly options. The price is way down right now, and we aren’t passing up the opportunity.

All three of the above securities are showing over 25% yield on TDAmeritrade. Just to be clear, we’ve been buying these and recommending them for a couple of years. This is important to point out, because abnormally high yields tend to be red flags.

  4. APRN - $5.78/share, options trade weekly. This is Blue Apron, that prepared meal company that can afford to advertise in some expensive time slots, so we feel good about their future.
Mostly, though, we just want to capitalize on the volatility spike and try to grab a 7% return on a covered call.

Or we’ll maybe do a LEAP.

  5. TCDA - $10.59/share, we’re bearish on this company that we know practically nothing about. What we do know, is that selling a put for October 21st (options trade monthly) is set to yield a 30% return.

Obviously there’s no guarantees, but we’re going to go ahead and sell the $10 Put. Or maybe use a calendar spread, because we don’t exactly have $1000 to drop on an unfounded assumption.

The actual risk here is unknown to us. The risk of you taking this recommendation and running with it, without having some actual knowledge of the security, is quite high. You can’t win if you don’t play, though!

…that, and it’s not the end of the world to roll the put or take assignment and sell calls.
